Module 9: UREs | K-CORE

Purpose & Goals

  • Create a pipeline from class project to mentored research.
  • Select and prepare students for K‑CORE/other UREs participation.

What Faculty Should Do (Step‑by‑Step)

  • Identify 3–6 high‑interest students from your CURE; invite to a short info session.
  • Set expectations: weekly meeting, small team (4-5), RA support, conference goal.
  • Draft a mini‑proposal with the student team (question, approach, timeline, role split).
  • Coordinate with program leads for onboarding, stipends (if applicable), research funds, and IRB.

Concrete Examples

  • ASA presentation pipeline (e.g., bilingual iconic memory poster in 2023).
  • Emphasize REL2 (maybe even REL3) skills: choose an inferential test; preregister an analysis plan.

Troubleshooting & Tips

  • Word of mouth: if not reaching your student number targets, ask those who are interested to bring in motivated friends from the same institution.
  • If capacity is limited, prioritize students using a short interest + availability form.
  • Advertise in-person conference participation to a desirable location.
  • If IRB is a blocker, pivot to archival data or simulations for the first term.
