Purpose & Goals
- Translate the project into a week‑by‑week schedule (covering the full semester or part of the semester) aligned to the INTREPID steps.
- Decide on the duration of the project: semester-long? Second half of the semester? A few concentrated weeks in the middle of the semester? Discuss pros and cons of each format with peers.
- Make milestones visible and manageable to avoid end‑of‑semester congestion.
- Decide how you will evaluate progress towards and completion of goals
What Faculty Should Do (Step‑by‑Step)
- Build a color‑coded deadline table (data collection, entry, checks, graphs, abstract, poster).
- Introduce a class‑wide spreadsheet by Week 3; lock header row and data validation rules.
- Schedule 3 in‑class ‘workshops’ for hands-on work (data check, graph clinic, poster draft).
- Require a storyboard or slide with each new component to keep students on pace.
- Set a ‘no later than’ poster draft deadline 2-3 weeks before the end of the semester/Research Day.
Concrete Examples
- See figure above for sample timeline
- Use ‘gate’ assignments (e.g., no graph until data pass checks).
Troubleshooting & Tips
- If the class is behind, allow a lean poster (1 graph + 3 bullet findings) to preserve the deadline.
- If spreadsheet chaos appears, freeze edits and appoint a data steward to triage issues.
Targeted Resources
- Poster storyboard template.
