Module 10: Conferences | Funding

Purpose & Goals

  • Convert course outputs into abstracts, posters, and talks.
  • Locate realistic travel/presentation funding for students.

What Faculty Should Do (Step‑by‑Step)

  • Use a 250‑word abstract template with structured headings; submit to campus/regional venues first.
  • Create a conference calendar (main conference in your field, discipline societies, CUNY events, established student conferences) with deadlines.
  • Assemble a basic budget (registration, travel, printing); explore internal funds (RIC, CUE) and PSC‑CUNY.
  • Coach students on 60‑second pitches and Q&A etiquette.

Concrete Examples

  • Student Research Day → CUNY‑wide event → national society meeting ladder.
  • Two‑poster strategy: class poster + focused K‑CORE poster.

Troubleshooting & Tips

  • If travel funds are scarce, submit to virtual sessions or local one‑day meetings.
  • Encourage student to apply for student travel subsidies (some conferences offer them); GC CUNY has opportunities for student travel funding if you get graduate students involved
  • If authorship questions arise, use a transparent contribution statement.
